Rest Stop

I woke in my car at a deserted rest stop and found every other vehicle facing mine with their headlights on.

None of them had drivers.

WHY THIS ONE WORKS

The setting is almost normal, but one spatial rule is wrong. That small mismatch is enough to imply a much larger one.

It follows the house rule: exactly two sentences, with the turn doing more than adding a monster. It changes the reader’s interpretation of the setup.

Rearview

I adjusted the rearview mirror and saw a child sitting in the back seat.

Hotel Key

The key card in my pocket opened Room 217 even though the clerk insisted the hotel had no second floor.

The Missing Minute

Every security camera in the building lost exactly one minute of footage at 3:17 a.m.

Crawlspace

The exterminator said the scratching in the crawlspace was too heavy to be rats.
