The Attic

The new homeowners asked why I had left a locked trunk in the attic.

I did not have the heart to tell them the attic was sealed shut when I sold the house.

WHY THIS ONE WORKS

The setting is almost normal, but one spatial rule is wrong. That small mismatch is enough to imply a much larger one.

It follows the house rule: exactly two sentences, with the turn doing more than adding a monster. It changes the reader’s interpretation of the setup.

Crawlspace

The exterminator said the scratching in the crawlspace was too heavy to be rats.

Inside the Wall

For weeks I heard a child crying inside the wall beside my bed.

The Stairwell

The emergency stairwell should have ended at the ground floor, but the numbers kept descending.

The Hallway

I heard my son running down the hallway and yelled that he was supposed to be asleep.

Hide and Seek

During hide-and-seek my daughter giggled from inside the wardrobe and told me I would never find her.
